The Secret Behind The Name Of D24 Durian (Guest Post)

Hi Pastry Lovers,

By way of introduction, my name is Melvin Chua and I am the founder of Durian Garden. Our company specializes in delivering fresh from the farm durians to our lovely customer’s door-steps as a whole fruit or packaged in a box upon request.

Today, I would like to share with you some fun facts regarding a popular type of durian in the market, the D24.

Before I begin, I would like to thank my friend Yong Jin (enthusiastic young entrepreneur) for giving me this opportunity to write this blog post.

How many of you know the reason why the D24 was named in that manner?  I guess not many. Here is the actual reason: ‘D’ stands for Durian ,and the number is a registration number for a cultivar. For example, the popular Mao Shan Wang is D197.

Why did the D24 become such a household name instead of D1, D2, D3 etc… ? This little chap used to rule the world before Mao Shan Wang took away his throne. He was a champion back in the 80s, and was well sort after by the Sultans of Malaysia. This title blessed him with a nickname of ‘Sultan durian’, however, he has lost much of his shine to his nemesis.

D24 has its own fans. The challenge is this fruit’s best season is very short and lasts around 1-2 weeks. In between, you will notice 10-15% of the durian is unripe at the center intersection of each portion. This can be very frustrating for both the seller and buyer.

The puree of D24 is good for making pastry products. The strong aromatic taste gives you a high after the first bite. I bet the next time when your adrenaline kicks in, you should know where to get your durian puffs and pancakes. Where else, but Sunlife Durian Puffs and Pastries.

Now, you can impress your family and friends with this new-found knowledge!

Best,

Melvin Chua
