Food Tasting Session For NUS Students

Indeed, it is perfectly normal to be hesitant when you patronize a new pastry establishment which you have never been to before. The following is an in-depth food review by NUS to help quell any doubts which you might have :3

Being curious what one of our latest partner, Sunlife Durian Puffs & Pastries , has to offer, we headed to their outlet at Causeway Point to check it out, and we were actually quite delighted with our findings. Here's our thoughts...

Sunlife Durian Puffs & Pastries has their food kiosk situated in the basement of Causeway Point, and can be rather easy to miss in a sea of more food kiosks. However, their friendly staff will draw you in with their warmest smiles and greetings.

We started off with their mini fruit tarts. Topped with glazed slices of kiwi, peaches and strawberries, the mini tarts looked colourful and tantalizing. The tart crust was sweet and of the right texture. We felt that the cream was less sweet than the tart crust so it did not make the tart too sweet on the whole. The individual slots of the takeaway container prevent the tarts from going all over the place although it makes the tarts a little bit tricky to pick up. The mini fruit tarts come in a box of 6 for $4.80 and it is indeed a good value for money.

Next up, mini chocolate éclairs. Crispy choux pastry is filled with chocolate cream and topped with chocolate glaze. The chocolate cream was not too runny and had the right consistency. The éclair is also not overly ‘chocolatey’ which is great for those who are not so much of a chocolate fan but love éclairs. We all know how fast éclairs disappear at buffet tables. So next time you are craving for éclairs, do get some from Sunlife. You can get six of these delectable ‘melt-in-your-mouth’s at a very affordable price of $3.80.

Sunlife also offers Lava Chocolate Cake ($2.50 each). These are best served warm “to allow an eruption of flowing chocolate”. It was unfortunate that we did not get to try these warm, but even at room temperature, the chocolate in the center was molten. We can only picture the image of gooey warm chocolate flowing as you cut into the cake when it is heated up! Sunlife’s Lava Chocolate Cake is very rich and is definitely one for the chocolate lovers. It is also unlike your normal lava chocolate cake in that the lava center is not entirely covered up by cake. Rather, it has a biscuit/tart base, followed by a wall of chocolate cake and then filled with the lava – almost like a cup. An interesting lava cake that is worth a try.

We moved on to the mini cream puffs and their signature mini durian puffs. The cream puffs are filled with vanilla custard which has a delectable sweetness and flavour to it. The mini durian puffs are, according to Sunlife, filled only with 100% D24 fresh durian puree with no additional mix-ins of flour or sugar. And we could definitely taste nothing but pure D24 goodness bursting through the choux puffs. Both types of puffs were bite-sized pillows of delight and we recommend getting these while you drop by the kiosk. The mini puffs come in boxes of 6, 12 or 20 starting from $3.50 and $3.80 for the cream puffs and durian puffs respectively.

Overall, Sunlife offers a good range of desserts that are not only affordable but also perfect for those random dessert cravings where you just want a cream puff you can pop into your mouth or some chocolate éclairs all to yourself. That is not all, with 10% off total bill for NUS undergraduates, staff and alumni, there’s one more reason for you to visit Sunlife Durian Puffs & Pastries to satisfy those cravings!
